  • Japanese Beetles: The Zinnia Destroyers

Hi Lovelies, It’s that time of year again, you know, the end of June.  That means one thing for me – June bugs. While the term “June bugs” can apply to large variety of creepy crawlies, around here, people mainly mean Japanese Beetles. Ugh! Over the years, I’ve managed to learn quite a few interesting tidbits about these annoying garden “friends”.  Admittedly, I was most interested in how to get rid of them. I was surprised to see that there are some areas in the United States that have never even seen a Japanese beetle. Talk about garden envy! A quick Google search of the bugs’ range can tell you whether…

  • Once upon a time…

Hi Lovelies, Once upon a time, there was a garden. It wasn’t the most beautiful garden in all the land, but it bountifully provided for those who lived in the castle. Okay, no, wait. I’m kidding. It wasn’t a castle. Not even close. Nope. Just a normal house, on a normal street, with some folks who were eager to improve their eating habits. The last vegetable garden to inhabit my backyard was about four years ago. At the time, I was very dedicated to growing my own food. I’ll admit that I wish I still had room for those wonderful veggies. One day, I’m sure that I will once again,…

  • Growing Casablanca Oriental Lilies

Hi Lovelies, Well, another week has passed. To catch you up, it’s been raining here – a lot. Upon walking into the garden yesterday, I instantly sank to my ankles deep in heavy clay mud. Yuck! I’m not ever sure you could call it mud, honestly. If you’ve ever sank deep into slimy river silt, you know the feeling I’m talking about – it’s gross, y’all. Anyway, before I get too distracted, I should focus. I know when I’m browsing the internet, I get so frustrated when I see a flower or vegetable that I absolutely love – but I can’t find the name of the variety anywhere. Ugh! Since…

  • It’s Time for Topping Dahlias!

Hi Lovelies, If you know me at all, you know that I’m absolutely obsessed with growing dahlias. I honestly, for whatever reason, just cannot help myself. They come in just about every size, shape, and color that you can imagine – did I mention that they’re absolutely gorgeous? The first few years that I grew dahlias, I was so frustrated. I would see these amazing photos online of these gigantic bushes completely covered in flowers – but mine looked nothing like that. Sure, mine were tall, but they would get one or two blooms before the frost and then be finished. What a waste of space, or so I thought!…

  • Updates – Sweet Peas, Lisianthus, Catmint, and Planting Time

Hi Lovelies, I hope that everyone is doing quite well. I’ve been on the road to recovery for the past week after a quick visit to the emergency room, yuck! With this, I’ve been away from the flowers and so much has gone on without me. Though I’m technically still supposed to be on bed rest, I’ve been slowly making my way around and cutting a few stems here and there. It’s always amazing how much just a little color can cheer me up! The calla lilies are still totally rocking, though the japanese beetles have finally arrived, which means their glory with be short lived and will be absolutely…

  • Movin’ Along

Hi Lovelies, Just thought I would take the time to quickly check in. Last time I took to writing, everything was pretty stressful. I didn’t have a place to grow anything and precious time was slipping away from me as I frantically searched. I’m happy to say, that though I’ve lost a few succession plantings, I found a nice field to use and temporarily call “home”. When you’re desperate, you can’t exactly be “choosey” – but rather extremely thankful that you once again have the opportunity to do what you absolutely love. Not having access to my original location has caused some other issues, too. Having made amendments to soil…
