This Week in the Garden- Cut Flowers and Vegetables

Another week has somehow managed to fly by, and I’m still not completely done planting everything into the garden yet. Most notably, I haven’t been able to find a place to plant the peanuts. I really need to get those plants into the ground. Anyway, I thought I would take the chance to post so pictures and show you what’s going on –

The kale is looking so great this year. There’s hardly been any damage from the slugs, and I’ve really been enjoying picking it on a weekly basis. I’ve already managed to freeze a lot for winter, but am also still enjoying it fresh. This variety is the ‘Nero Di Toscana’ – also known as lacinato or dinosaur kale. It’s so dark green and lovely.

My shirt also came in the mail this week. If you follow me on other social media stuff, then you know that I designed this shirt a few weeks ago. If you like them, they’re available by clicking on the “shop” tab at the top of my blog. I think they turned out pretty well. However, they do seem like the sizes run a little bit large.

The sweet peas that we started using the winter sowing method have also started to bloom! They’re a little bit shorter than last year, but I think that mainly has to do with the fact that it’s been so hot already. If I’m remembering correctly, I believe that I planted the ‘Spencer’s Mix’ variety.

One of my two peony bushes finally bloomed, and the flowers look pretty bad. I’m not sure why, but they look really “old” – even though they just opened. The actual bushes look nice and lush – the blooms just look bad. Has anyone ever had that problem before? I’d love to know all about it in the comments. Thanks in advance! 🙂 🙂

If you’ve been following along, you may remember that a nest full of birds has been living right above the pea plants. I haven’t gotten to harvest many peas, as the nesting robins have been super aggressive protecting their family. Here’s one watching me – and eating all my mulberries!

In addition to the shirts, I’ve also really been focusing on soap! You can also join the “soap of the month” club by clicking on the SHOP link at the top of this page. I know I feel like I’m always talking about this type of thing – but working towards making the blog sustainable is really important to me. I appreciate you so much. The support of people who read the blog really does mean something to me. Thank you so much. I hope you’re having a great day!
