Winter Sowing Roses from Seeds in Zone 6/7

Write this down as another first time gardening seed starting attempt thing! Even after growing my cut flower garden all these years, believe it or not, there are still things that I have never tried to grow before. One such flower that I’ve never tried to grow from seed are roses. You see rose seeds for sale online all the time, and more often than not I don’t trust them. After all, I’m pretty sure those rainbow roses aren’t real.

Luckily, miniature china roses are definitely a real thing and can apparently be grown from seed. I bought a package of a variety of seeds called ‘Angel Wings’ from Renee’s Garden Seeds. I’ve had nothing but success with flowers from Renee’s Garden in the past, so I’m going to trust them and give this a try.

Since roses are perennial and are know to take months (sometimes years) to germinate, I’m going to winter sow these seeds as soon as possible. Winter sowing miniature rose seeds is a great idea because we’ll need nature to help us take care of this planting until the time is just right. While I can’t specifically comment on the exact requirements to germinate rose seeds, my garden instinct tells me that they’ll definitely need some stratification and exposure to cold.

Have you ever attempted to grow roses from seed before? How did it work? I’d love to hear all about your experience in the comments below!
