April Week 2: Cut Flower Garden Tour

Things are progressing quite nicely in the cut flower garden! I am so pleasantly surprised to see that many of the hardy annual plants that we sowed last fall have started to stretch – and in some cases, bloom. Let’s take a quick look at what’s growing, shall we?

Taking a quick look down the unheated hoop house, things have really started to grow. I’ll admit, I certainly haven’t done the best job in keeping the rows weed free. Between the cold weather and working, I just never got around to weeding. I’m so glad that I had used the black landscape fabric.

The ranunculus have finally started to bloom. The flowers are much later than normal this year. I can only assume that this was due to the extremely cold weather that we have late this winter. Hopefully, we’ll see more and more ranunculus as the weather continues to warm up.

The English daisies look absolutely adorable! This variety is called ‘Habanero Mix’. These were so incredibly easy to grow from seed, too. I’m really looking forward to adding more of these to my flower bed in the fall. These are technically a perennial flower that is hardy to zone 4 or 5.

My very first Icelandic poppy also opened! Hooray! So far, none of the other buds have opened. I can’t wait to pick these for cut flower arrangements.

The onions and leeks that I transplanted are starting to take root. The difference doesn’t look like much, but they plants are definitely starting to add new green growth. I’ll definitely need to start fertilizing them soon.

Last, but certainly not least – the tulips. My first tulip is set to open very soon. I’m honestly not sure what variety this is. I really need to start labeling the things that I plant in the yard! That’s it! Thanks so much for reading! I hope you’re having a great day!

  1. Great isn’t it to go and discover what is growing and doing well in the garden. Yours does look great already, I like those ranunculi that are starting to bloom. Great work being done!
