Here in my zone, it seems like I never have much luck with fringed tulips. While most of the single fringed tulips grow well, most none of the double fringed varieties get tall enough to use for cut flowers. Unfortunately, this also proved to be true for the ‘Matchpoint’ tulips that I planted last fall.
Though most of the photos that I had found online showed dark purple flowers, the ‘Matchpoint’ tulips in my garden opened to a very bright pink color with white veining. The addition of the dark stamens in the certain of the blooms really added to the cut flower appeal of the tulip – and for whatever reason, reminded me of watermelons!
In my garden, ‘Matchpoint’ tulips only reached about one foot tall in full bloom. While I’m sure that I can use these short blooms for small vases and posy type arrangements, I’m not sure if I’ll grow them again in the cut flower garden. What do you think?
