Mass Planting Tulip Bulbs – Finally!

If anything, this fall planting season hasn’t been “normal.” Between moving house and a huge delay in shipping times, I feel so relieved that I was finally able to tuck away the tulips into their beds today. This season, I planted roughly 1,500 bulbs. Though that isn’t a big number for most experienced growers, it’s the most that I’ve ever planted.

My entire tulip bed is about 4 ft. x 20 ft. As you can see, I did my best to pack the bulbs in as tightly as possible. Most packages will tell you to space them about 4 inches apart, but mine are much closer – about an inch between each. Since tulips nearly always perform as annuals in my zone, I’ll remove the bulbs from the garden as I harvest the flowers for arrangements next spring.

Are you growing tulips this year? Which variety are you most excited to try? I’d love to hear all about your experiences in the comment section below. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by the blog. I hope that you’re having a really great day!

  1. I planted about 600 bulbs this fall/winter. I still have about 100 to go. Hoping that they will make it through the snow we just got. My mom lives in KY (near Etown) and says that her tulips did not grow back; I didn’t realize they perform like annuals there.
